In an era of unprecedented globalization, digitalization, and technological innovation, combined with the evolving journey of adolescence, teenagers face novel challenges growing up. The mental health demands of teens are greater than ever; in fact, nearly half of today’s youth will encounter a mental health problem. Amid such uncertainty, it’s evident that teenagers are seeking stability. What they need is a foundation of trust and hope to keep moving forward as they learn to navigate their way in the world. In our Lancaster County community, the Samaritan Center is working to build trust and hope for local youth through its TeenHope program. Trust is key in any relationship, and at Samaritan, we really see how a safe, supportive relationship can make a difference for young people. That’s why our TeenHope team is quick to connect with students who are struggling with depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, or self-harm. We give them hope by offering helpful resources, education, and by making it easier for them to talk openly about their mental health challenges. Recently, Samaritan began to offer school-based counseling as an additional resource. Samaritan recognizes that students in elementary, middle and high schools, and the schools themselves, benefit from additional support and increased access to therapy in the school setting on a more long-term basis. In Fall 2024, a handful of schools in the Lancaster County area began partnering with Samaritan for this resource. Studies show that people who receive treatment for diagnosed anxiety and depression have a 60-80% positive outcome rate. During this 2024-2025 school year, TeenHope has screened 1,984 students in eight local school districts. Thus far, 27% of students have been identified as at-risk for depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts or self-harm. It can be disheartening to hear of the increasing needs for mental health services for teens. However, TeenHope is there to help teens feel seen, and equip them with the information needed to address their mental health concerns. Samaritan will continue to seek creative ways to meet the mental health needs of our local students. The TeenHope program and school-based counseling services will continue to provide mental and emotional health education and wellness screenings to middle and high school students throughout Lancaster County. Through these resources we offer young people the solid ground they need, and a hope that reminds them that even in the darkness of depression and anxiety, brighter days are ahead.
